Community Unity Council: Transitional Housing
Program for Young Men

Summary:

At any given time in our city, young men between the ages of 14-25 are sleeping in cars, on couches, or in unsafe conditions with no stable place to call home. Many of these young men are not homeless by choice; they are escaping violence, aging out of foster care, or struggling with untreated trauma. Without intervention, they face an uphill battle that often leads to incarceration, unemployment, or continued cycles of instability.

Community Unity Council believes that every young man deserves the chance to heal, grow, and thrive. That is why we are proposing the Transitional Housing Program for Young Men, a comprehensive initiative that not only provides a safe bed but also focuses on mental health healing and workforce development.

The program's mission is to break cycles of houselessness, unemployment, and unaddressed mental health challenges by addressing root causes, offering wraparound support services, and fostering self-sufficiency. This program is more than shelter,  it is a launchpad for opportunity and stability.

Background & Need:

Young men ages 14–25 are at a critical life stage where housing insecurity can have devastating, long-term consequences. Many face:

  • Family conflict or aging out of foster care
  • Unemployment and lack of career guidance
  • Undiagnosed and untreated mental health issues such as depression, PTSD, or anxiety
  • Exposure to violence and negative peer influence

Without intervention, these challenges can lead to homelessness, incarceration, substance abuse, and poverty. This program addresses these barriers holistically by providing housing stability, mental health care, and workforce pathways in one coordinated model..
